Before the Cleaners Arrive: A Checklist

Twenty minutes of preparation prevents most of the problems people describe afterwards, and it usually saves money too.

A week before

Agree the scope and the all-in price in writing, ask which method will be used, and check whether your building requires a certificate of insurance. A COI can take a day or two to arrange.

The day before

Clear small items, cables and breakables. Decide what furniture will be moved, and by whom. Plan where pets will be during the visit.

At pickup or arrival

Photograph both sides of the rug in good light, point out stains and say what you have already used on them, and get a receipt, tag or job number.

For in-home carpet cleaning

Prepare ventilation, keep a hard-floor room usable, and plan the order of rooms so you are not trapped. Carpet is commonly dry to the touch in 6–12 hours and fully dry within about 24 hours.

On return

Check the rug in daylight before signing, compare the invoice with the quote line by line, and raise any difference in writing straight away.

Do I need to move furniture myself?

Light, movable items such as lamps and decor are usually yours. Sofas, chairs and tables are often included, while heavy or fragile pieces are normally excluded. Confirm it in writing.

What is a certificate of insurance?

Proof of the company’s insurance, made out to your building. Many New York buildings require one before a crew can work or collect a rug.

How long will my rug be away?

In-plant cleaning is typically 5–14 days door to door, including collection, cleaning, controlled drying and delivery.
