Rug Cleaning Safety Checklist
Fifteen minutes of care before a rug leaves your home prevents almost every problem people report afterwards.

Before you book
Ask these six questions
- Ask for the all-in price in writing, and what is not included
- Ask which method will be used, and where the work happens
- Ask whether stairs, access or travel are charged separately
- Ask for the realistic return date, not the best case
- Ask whether your rug is insured while in the company’s care
- Check whether your building needs a certificate of insurance
At collection
Five minutes that protect you
- Photograph both sides of the rug in good light before it leaves
- Note any existing damage, thin areas or previous repairs
- Get a receipt, tag or job number at collection
- Confirm the agreed price again before work starts
- Point out stains and say what you have already used on them
On return
Before you sign
- Check the rug in daylight before signing anything
- Compare the invoice against the written quote, line by line
- Raise any difference in writing straight away
- Keep receipts and messages until you are satisfied
- Leave an honest review describing the quote and the final price
Red flags
Stop and Ask Again If You See These
- A quote far below every typical range, with no method named
- A fee that appears only after the crew arrives
- Collection with no paperwork and no job number
- A return date that moves repeatedly with no explanation
- Pressure to pay in full, in cash, before any work is done
Typical Prices to Sanity-Check a Quote
- Carpet: $1–$4 per sq ft, or $50–$150 per room
- Stairs: $2–$5 per step, or $30–$80 per flight
- Area rugs: $3–$10 per sq ft depending on fiber and borough
- Pickup minimum: typically $150–$250
- In-plant cleaning: typically 5–14 days door to door

What is the single most useful question?
Is that the all-in price, and what is not included? Most disputes come from the gap between those two answers.
Should I pay a deposit?
A deposit is normal for larger jobs. Paying the full amount in cash before any work is done is not, especially if the rug is leaving your home.
What if the final invoice is higher than the quote?
Ask for the difference in writing, itemised. Stairs, access and add-ons are the usual causes, and they should have been disclosed before the work started.
