Most Persian rugs are wool pile on a cotton foundation, sometimes with silk highlights. The weave, the dyes and the wear pattern say more about the right treatment than the name of the design.
Where wear starts
Edges, ends and the line where a door swings. Traffic pushes the pile flat and grit cuts it, so the earliest signs are usually along the sides and across one favourite walking route.
When to repair, and in what order
Stabilise before you beautify. Securing a fraying edge or a loose end stops the damage spreading; cosmetic work can wait. Cleaning first usually helps, because it shows the true colour and condition for matching materials.
Moths
Moths prefer undisturbed wool in dark, still places: under furniture, behind doors, in storage. Regular vacuuming of both sides and lifting furniture occasionally prevents most infestations. Treatment is typically $20–$50 per rug.
