A typical Bay Ridge house with three to five carpeted rooms plus a hall generally runs $300 to $700, with stairs and basement additional. Carpet is quoted either per square foot, usually $1 to $4 with whole-house jobs at the lower end, or per room at roughly $50 to $150. The two are not directly comparable, which is why quotes are confusing — ask which method is being used and what size counts as a room.

The warning signs are unstated room size caps, a "basic clean" that turns out to be a light surface pass with the real cleaning presented as an upgrade, mandatory add-ons, and a price that changes once the equipment is set up. The test that costs nothing: ask for the total in writing before booking, including stairs, hallways, furniture moving and any minimum.

It varies enormously and is rarely stated upfront. Most move light, movable items and clean around heavy ones — beds, wardrobes, pianos, full bookcases and electronics generally stay put. Some charge for moving and some will not move anything. Ask when booking, and if you want the carpet under the sofa cleaned, say so then rather than on the day. Clearing small items, breakables and cables yourself speeds the job up.

Hot water extraction typically takes 6 to 12 hours, sometimes longer in humid weather; low-moisture encapsulation dries in 1 to 2 hours. Good airflow shortens both considerably — open windows and run fans. Stay off the carpet while it dries, since walking on damp carpet re-soils it immediately, which is the usual reason a fresh clean looks disappointing the next day.

Because the problem is moisture rather than dirt. Below-grade concrete lets humidity through, and carpet laid on it holds that moisture against the underlay, causing mildew underneath and a smell that returns within weeks of every clean. Cleaning removes the symptom, not the cause. A dehumidifier run consistently is the single most effective fix, along with a moisture barrier or below-grade-rated underlay if the carpet is being replaced anyway, plus ventilation — and check for an actual leak before assuming it is ambient humidity.

Every 12 to 18 months in a normal household, and annually with pets or children. Vacuuming properly in between — slowly and in both directions rather than quickly — does more for carpet life than the cleaning schedule does.

It is the easiest in the five boroughs. A driveway or front path, no doorman, no freight elevator, no certificate of insurance, no building rules, and street parking that exists. Oversized rugs are straightforward here where they are a real problem in prewar Manhattan buildings, and scheduling is flexible because there is no freight window to work around. Shore Road apartment buildings are the exception — check whether a certificate of insurance is required.

For a small area of synthetic wall-to-wall carpet, it is reasonable — rental runs roughly $30 to $60 a day plus solution. For a whole house it is a long, heavy job with a machine far less powerful than professional equipment, and the most common problem is over-wetting, which leaves carpet damp for days and can cause mildew in the underlay. Never use one on a wool area rug.
